Tamim propels Ctg to 2nd place in BPL

Sports Reporter

Captain Tamim Iqbal once again led the team from the front as Chittagong Vikings made a giant leap towards the last four spot in the BPL-4 with a five-wicket victory over Khulna Titans at Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium in the capital yesterday.
Tamim hit a patient 59-ball 66 not out to steer the side hunt down Khulna’s total of 131 for eight as Chittagong made 135 for five in 18.4 overs.
Vikings appeared to gun down the target with ease when Tamim and Chris Gayle characteristically took the bowlers in disdain and kicked-off the chase with a flurry of boundaries.
Once Gayle was out after scoring 19 off 11 with three fours and one six, Khulna sensed a chance to comeback. Their past record of defending small totals inspired them to do so which translated into the body language of the players.
And they came back on the back of some fine fielding effort. A direct through of Shuvagata Hom from deep mid-wicket caught Anamul Haque Bijoy (3) well short of the crease and another direct hit of captain Mahmudullah from cover ran Shoaib Malik out for one as Vikings were at perilous 54 for three.
The situation was compounded with the dismissal of Zakir Hossain. With the side reeling at 64 for four, Tamim, aided by Zahurul Islam Omee, started repairing job. In the process, Tamim brought up his fourth and second consecutive fifty in the tournament. However, he perished to a loose drive off Kevin Cooper just as Omee looked set, bringing an end to their 37 runs partnership.
But Chittagong were well placed to win the match and still Khulna could take the chance to win it had Shuvagata Hom not put down the catch offered by Tamim at point when he was on 55. Tamim was also reprieved by Hom when he was on 24.Tamim and Mohammad Nabi later sealed the deal without any fuss. The victory meant Chittagong climbed to the second spot in the point table with 12 points in 10 matches on better net-run rate. Dhaka Dynamites are on top of the table with 12 in nine  matches and with better run rate. Khulna were pushed to third position despite having 12 points in 10 matches.
