The Indian defence minister, Manohar Gopalkrishna Prabhu Parrikar, will arrive in Dhaka today on a two-day visit. Parrikar, who will lead a 11-member delegation, will call on President Abdul Hamid and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.
Parrikar will be the first Indian defence minister to visit Bangladesh, He will also hold talks with the PM's security adviser, Tarique Ahmed Siddique, and chiefs of three services.
According to a PTI report, Parrikar, who will be accompanied by the vice-chiefs of the Indian army and air force, deputy chief of the Indian navy and the Indian coast guard chief, will visit the military academy in Chittagong and meet Hasina, who also holds the defence portfolio.
Top defence ministry officials said the focus of the trip was to deepen security ties and firm up a defence cooperation agreement, which is likely to be signed when Hasina visits New Delhi around December 17.
According to a report of The Times of India, India is dispatching Parrikar to Dhaka to chalk out a major upgrade in bilateral defence cooperation against the backdrop of China continuing to expand its strategic footprint in Bangladesh.
The report says that a new defence cooperation framework, which will lead to stepped-up military supplies, technology transfer, training and joint exercises, as well as closer cooperation in counter-terrorism, will be discussed during Parrikar's two-day visit to Bangladesh from November 30. It is likely to be inked when Sheikh Hasina visits India in December.
