Combating violence against women

Combating violence
against women

Speakers at a discussion meeting in Rajshahi recently said that there is no alternative to creating mass-awareness with a changed social mindset for preventing all sorts of violence and repressions against women to ensure equal women rights and women empowerment. According to a report in this newspaper on Sunday, Association for Community Development (ACD), a rights-based non-government organisation, arranged the programme in observance of the International Women Repression Prevention Day- 2016.
Women constitute half of the total population of the country. It is heartening to note that the prime minister, the speaker and the leader of major political parties are women.  With the numerical strength and women’s participation in the mainstream development activities show that they are heading for empowerment. Despite all these violence against women and children is showing no sign of abatement. Hardly a day passes without incidents of repression on women. Reports on torture on women, child marriage, violation of modesty of women and girls after abduction, teasing of school and college going girls by derailed youths, torture and killing of women by husbands and in-laws for dowry, incidents of gender discrimination make newspaper headlines very often.
In fact, repression on women has increased in the country in a horrifying dimension in recent times. Scores of women are still suffering due to violence perpetrated on them by their male counterparts. It is occurring in urban and in rural areas. Gender discrimination has bedeviled many a woman. Vast womenfolk in rural areas of the country are still leading sub-human life due to abysmal poverty, illiteracy, curse of early marriage, pangs of premature motherhood and dowry.
There is no denying the fact that they are going ahead defying various limitations confronting them.  Their exposure to the different sectors of life, particularly the RMG industry, has opened up a wide avenue for them.  The present government has done a lot for the improvement of the lot of women but much more should be done. Comprehensive efforts of all stakeholders including the government-non-government organisations, civil society and every citizen are needed for rooting out violence against women.
The unemployed educated young women should be imparted training, particularly on computer operating and ICT, throughout the country for expanding their job opportunities. Those who are not educated should be given training on poultry farming, cattle rearing and similar other jobs.  In this way the unemployment problem facing them can be solved greatly. Small women entrepreneurs should be provided with loans on easy terms and conditions.
