The BNP is yet to get any response from the president’s office on its letter seeking an appointment with the head of the state to hand over the party proposal on reconstituting the Election Commission (EC), according to party sources. The letter was sent to the President's office on November 23. The party would wait for a few more days for the President's response and then think about the next course of action, the sources said. “We're yet to receive any response from the President’s office. But we're still waiting for it,” said BNP standing committee member Amir Khoshru Mahmud Chowdhury.
He also said that the party sought an appointment with President Abdul Hamid to formally place before him Khaleda Zia's 13-point proposal on reconstitution of the EC. “We hope that being the guardian of the state, the President would consider the request of a major political party and give us an appointment,” he added.
The BNP leader further said they should make the proposal available to the President as he would reform the EC and thus should take a look at the proposal. “We want to formally place the proposal to him (President). We're waiting for his initiative,” he added.
A senior leader preferring anonymity said that the party would wait for a few more days for the President's response. If the party did not get any response from Bangabhaban, it might send the proposal to Bangabhaban by a team, he added.
The BNP sent the letter to the President's office after it failed to get any response from the President’s military secretary regarding their verbal request for an appointment.
Earlier, BNP secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir told reporters that the chairperson’s private secretary, Sattar, had spoken to the President’s military secretary over phone for an appointment with the President, but he did not get back to him.
On November 18, Khaleda Zia placed her party’s 13-point proposal to reconstitute the EC based on the consensus of all political parties having representation in Parliament since Independence.
Awami League general secretary Obaidul Quader termed Khaleda’s proposal as one without substance, while Jatiya Party chairman HM Ershad said political parties outside the current Parliament had no right to speak about formation of the EC.
The tenure of the current EC will expire in February next year.
