Muhith files Tk 2.12 lakh tax return online

Finance Minister AMA Muhith yesterday submitted his income tax return through online and paid Tk 2,12,611 income tax for fiscal year 2016-17 (Assessment Year) against his net income of Tk 1.98 crore, while in the last  fiscal year, he paid Tk 1, 17,533 income tax against his income of Tk 3,425,420. 

The finance minister filed his tax return online at secretariat office in the National Board of Revenue (NBR) in the capital yesterday. Chairman of NBR Md Nojibur Rahman, journalists and high officials of the finance ministry were present. Muhith earned Tk 30,342,740 in last eight years after becoming minister since 2008 to June 2016.  In FY 2008-09 Muhith earned Tk 2,262,432 and his net asset was worth Tk 11,483,036. During the last eight years his net asset increased worth of Tk 83,58,050 added a statement.  
While addressing the journalists after filing the tax return he said “I earned the lion portion of these assets when I was in abroad, which is not taxable.” 
He also said the last date for filing of income tax return by individual tax payers is November 30 and the deadline will not be extended this year. 
“In many countries including the United States, income tax day is observed on a specific date and submission of income tax return is not allowed after that date, we have introduced such a day in our country from this year and I hope it will continue in years to come”, he said. 
Asking about tax evasion he said, there are two options to stop tax evasion–one is punishment and second is to build up awareness to pay the income tax.
