RTI act to establish farmers’ 
rights, say speakers

RAJSHAHI: Terming the Right to Information (RTI) Act as an epoch-making initiative, speakers at a training workshop have stated that the act will play a pivotal role in establishing farmers’ rights as a whole, reports BSS. They also underscored the need for changing mindset for proper implementation of the RTI Act in the greater interest of ensuring transparency and accountability in society.
They said that political commitment side by side with government’s goodwill is very vital to attain the cherished goal.
They were addressing the inaugural session of the daylong training workshop titled “Application of RTI Act-2009” organised by Barind Multipurpose Development Authority (BMDA) in its conference hall on Saturday.
BMDA Chairman Dr Akram Hossain Chowdhury addressed the workshop as chief guest with its Executive Director Engineer Abdur Rashid in the chair.
Superintending Engineers Dr Abdul Kashem and Shamsul Huda and Project Director (Agriculture) Rafiqul Islam also spoke. During his keynote presentation, Amirul Islam, deputy secretary of Ministry of Agriculture, narrated various aspects of full-length implementation of the RTI Act.
He termed the RTI Act as the key to development of the farmers in general and said through its successful implementation the act will facilitate them to become empowered. He also said the act will supplement the effort of establishing good governance coupled with removing corruption through ensuring transparency and accountability in every spheres of life.
Akram Chowdhury said the RTI has widened people’s access to information, which will help establish their constitutional rights in all spheres of development.
The government has enacted RTI Act, 2009 to empower the people through ensuring their access to information.
He urged all BMDA engineers and other officials concerned to provide necessary information to the farmers for their benefits.
