BNP secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir yesterday termed the ruling Awami League (AL) as an old and tested autocratic party. “Whenever there’s killing, terrorism and manipulation of tenders, the AL is there. There is no way I can call it a new autocrat. We’ve seen what type of monster it can turn into whenever it comes to power,” he said. The BNP leader was speaking at a meeting in the city's Dhaka Reporters' Unity.
“The (AL) will speak for democracy, but they actually work against it,” he added. The Doctors’ Association of Bangladesh (DAB), a pro-BNP physicians’ platform, held the meeting to mark the 26th martyrdom anniversary of Dr Shamsul Alam Khan. Fakhrul urged the government to take the path of consensus by shunning its audacious attitude. “Please take initiatives to hold talks over Khaleda Zia’s 13-point proposal to constitute the Election Commission,” he said.
He also accused the government of killing over 1,000 of BNP leaders and activists. Five hundred more were victims of enforced disappearance and thousands more were maimed, he added. The BNP leader said some people loved to say that the BNP was not successful in carrying out their movement, but they were not right.
He also said many people were killed before the January 5 general poll in 2014 and even after the election. There was no opposition leader or activist who was not implicated in a case at that time, he added. Presided over by Dr Sirajul Islam, the meeting was also addressed, among others, by BNP chairperson’s adviser Amanullah Aman, joint secretary general Khairul Kabir Khokan, Nazimudidn Alam, Habibur Rahman Habib, Fazlul Haque Milon and Dr AZM Zahid Hossain. Earlier, speaking at another function, BNP standing committee member Nazrul Islam Khan alleged that the country’s democracy was in a moribund state. “Ziaur Rahman had restored democracy from the one-party BAKSAL. Sometime later, democracy was again restored through a movement against Ershad. But now, the democracy is almost dead,” he said.
