Md Mahfizur Rahman of Bangladesh Navy set a new record in the men’s 200-metre freestyle event of 28th National Swimming Championship which began at the Shaheed Nazrul Islam National Swimming pool in the capital yesterday.
Mahfiz broke his own record clocking a timing of 1 min 58.44 sec. Faisal Ahmed of Bangladesh Army and Asif Reza of Navy won the silver and bronze medal respectively.
The Chief of Naval Staff and President of Bangladesh Swimming Federation Admiral Nizamuddin Ahmed inaugurated the three-day championship as chief guest. Md. Rafiz Uddin Rafiz, general secretary of the federation was also present during the opening ceremony.
The chief guest witnessed the first four events and he also gave away prizes among the winners. A total of 334 swimmers including 86 women drawn from 59 teams are fighting for 42 gold medals. The national diving and water-polo championship are also being held simultaneously.
Jewel Ahmed of Army won the first gold medal when he finished first in 200-metre individual medley. Palash Chowdhury and Md Asif Reza of Navy clinched the silver and bronze medals.
Romana Akhtar of Army and Nazma Khatun of Navy shared the first two women gold medals when
they became first in women’s 200-metre individual medley and 200-metre freestyle respectively.
