Journalists of both electronic and print media yesterday staged countrywide rallies, processions and submitted memorandum to the authorities concerned demanding immediate announcement of ninth wage board to enhance salaries with other benefits, reports BSS.
“The unusual price hike of essentials is severely affecting the life of the media people due to pay redoubling of government officials, employees and other professionals," Manjurul Ahsan Bulbul, president of Bangladesh Federal Union of Journalists (BFUJ), told a rally as the chief guest in front of National Press Club in the capital yesterday noon. Chaired by Shaban Mahmud, president of Dhaka Union of Journalists (DUJ), the rally was addressed, among others, by BFUJ secretary general Omar Faruque, DUJ general secretary Sohel Haider Chowdhury, BFUJ joint secretary general Amiya Ghatak Pulack, DUJ leaders Noor-e-Jannat Akhter Sima, Akhter Hossain , Mahmudur Rahman Khokan and former DRU president Shakhawat Hossain Badsha.
BFUJ secretary general Omar Faruque urged the information minister to form the wage board by December 3, 2016. Otherwise, he warned, the journalist community will be compelled to go for tough movement including sit-in-demonstration across the country from December 4.
After the rally, the journalists brought out a procession on Topkhana Road. Before going to information ministry to submit a memorandum, the journalist leaders thanked their members in Dhaka and all affiliated unions for making today's programme a success.
