Locals with the assistance of Water Development Board have taken measures to construct an embankment voluntarily to prevent erosion by the Kirtankhola River at Charbaria point of the city as sustainable government initiatives have not yet been taken in this regard.
Protection work at Charkawa point of the city area through dumping geo textile bags was started yesterday.
Zahiruddin Ahmed, executive engineer of Water Development Board, Barisal office, hailing the people’s initiatives to check river erosion said that it will inspire and make us aware about the risks of erosion.
The initiatives were taken after WDB except placing some geo textile bags failed to take any other steps to check erosion at this point, said Yunus Mia of Sardar Bari at Charbaria.
Local people cutting bamboos, trees from their gardens and plantations and piling those at erosion-points are trying to create a fence to prevent washing away the sand, mud geo-bags by the river current for making an embankment, visiting the spot the journalists saw. Deputy Commissioner of Barisal D Gazi Md Sayfuzaman visiting the spot said that it is a good sign that erosion victims of Barisal did not want relief but want embankment.
Zahiruddin Ahmed, executive engineer of the WDB Barisal office, said only Tk 3 crore has been sanctioned after submitting two proposals worth Tk 46 crore to prevent river erosion in 4,600 meters area of the Kirtankhola River in Charbaria and Charkawa points.
Besides, Tk30 lakh was sanctioned on an emergency basis against proposals of Tk 60 lakhs to dump geo textile bags at the erosion points, the WDB official said.
However, he hailing the voluntary efforts of local people at Charbaria to construct embankment said although it may not give any sustainable result against checking speedy river erosion, it will inspire people and make them aware about needs to prevent the danger.

Different establishments like roads, crop lands, residential houses, educational and religious institutions, shops and markets, ferry stations are eroding away every day.
