Shakib Al Hasan came up with a sparkling all-round performance while Dwayne Bravo executed the slower in exotic fashion as Dhaka Dynamites struck back in winning streak with an emphatic 32-run win over Comilla Victorians yesterday at Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium.
Opting to bat first, Dhaka compiled a challenging 170 for four thanks to an unbeaten 41 from Shakib. Comilla kept them in the hunt till 10 overs after which Bravo scythed them down with a series of slower deliveries and finally his three for 32 became the reason Mashrafe Bin Mortaza’s side was held back to 138 for eight.
Mehedi Maruf continued his imperious form, giving Dhaka yet another high flying start. All though he couldn’t carry the start, his 17 ball-22 set the platform up front. Kumar Sangakkara then was joined by his long time friend Mahela Jayawardena as the experienced duo stabbed off any hiccup to share a valuable 45 runs. Sangakkara made 33 while Jayawardena scored 31 with a healthy strike rate.
Comilla leg-spinner Rashid helped his side claw back into the game with the wicket of those two legends in his consecutive overs but the platform was nicely set to give the middle order batsmen a license to go on berserk.
Shakib initially played a second fiddle to Mosaddek Hossain Saikat whose 18 ball-25 gave the scoreboard a pace that they needed at that stage. Shakib came out from the shell when it mattered most as he launched a spectacular attack on the Comilla bowlers in the death overs to help the side amass a total which proved to be match winning at the end. His 26 balls knock was studded with four fours and a six.
Rashid Khan finished with a figure of two for 26 in four overs.
Comilla’s opening pair of Nazmul Hossain Shanto and Khalid Latif gave the side a solid start in pursuit of a big total. They went rather unscathed until Mohammad Shahid gave the breakthrough with the wicket of Shanto who scored 17. Abu Jayed then removed Imrul Kayes for 9 but Khalid Latif kept the asking run rate under control with calculative yet aggressive batting. He was aided by Ahmed Shehzad and at one phase it seemed Comilla could take the control of the match.
Bravo magic started from that point. His series of slower deliveries literally distracted the batsmen from the concentration and thereby slowed down the scoring rate. Bravo however reaped the reward for his all good work with the important wicket of Latif who top-scored for Comilla with 33 ball-38.
Sekugge Prasanna then took out Liton Das to make Dhaka absolute favourite in the match. With Ahmed Shehzad still in the crease, Dhaka however couldn’t afford to have relaxed. And when Mashrafe hit Sanjamul Islam for big six, things looked ominous. Bravo appeared as rescuer yet again, outfoxing Shehzad with a slower when he was on 22. Three balls later he again struck with the wicket of Mashrafe to confirm Dhaka’s fifth victory in eighth match.
Shakib and Nasir Hossain then bowled with accurate line and length to jolt the Comilla’s lower order and handed Mashrafe’s side their seventh defeat in eighth match.
Apart from Bravo’s three for 32, Shakib, Nasir, Abu Jayed, Shahid and Prasanna picked up one wicket apiece. The victory however put Dhaka to the second position in the point table with 10 points while Comilla remained at the bottom of the table.
