Plastic factory catches fire
A fire broke out at a plastic factory in Kamrangirchar area of the capital on Saturday morning.
The fire was noticed at the factory on the ground floor of a three-storey building adjacent to the Eidgah ground in Kamrangirchar around 7:31am. Firefighters have reached the spot and are trying to douse the flames. Golam Nabi Chowdhury, warehouse inspector of the Fire Service and Civil Defence (FSCD) control room, said eight firefighting units are working there and they have already brought the fire under control. The origin of the fire as well as the losses and damages could not be ascertained immediately.

Workshop on mobile journalism
A two-day workshop on mobile journalism for UNB journalists, both from the capital and different districts, began in the capital on Saturday.
UNB Chairman Amanullah Khan inaugurated the programme titled ‘Advanced Mobile Journalism Workshop’ at its conference room. Some 30 UNB journalists, including 15 district correspondents, are taking part in the workshop to have better understanding about mobile journalism and thus improve their professional skills. Wall Street Journal correspondent Syed Zain Al-Mahmood and renowned photographer Faisal Azim are conducting the training sessions. Speaking at the programme, Amanullah Khan said the UNB reporters and correspondents have been empowered with smart-phones so that they could promptly send photos and video stories from the spot.

Day labourer killed 
A day labourer has reportedly been killed by unknown assailants in Harishpur area of the district on Thursday night, police said.
The deceased was identified as Shahidul Islam, 35, son of Mozammel Haque of Boharail village under the same upazila. On information, a police team rushed to the place of occurrence and recovered the body from nearby of an irrigation deep-tubewell this morning. Police sent the body to the morgue of Rajshahi Medical College Hospital for post mortem. Mirja Abdus Salam, Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Tanore Police Station, said the body was several marks of wound.

Bangladeshi students win quiz competition
Bangladeshi students have obtained the second position in the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC) General Quick Quiz Competition held in Nepal.
The four-member Bangladesh team comprising Sakim and Redwan Uddin Ahmed of Notre Dam College and Sadman Kabir and Sayeem Bin Rafiq of Dhaka Science College made the achievement. The SAARC secretariat in Nepal organised the Competition in Voktopur recently. The Bangladesh team obtained the first and second runner up position in the competition. Former Nepalese Prime Minister KP Sharma attended the final competition and prize giving ceremony as the chief guest.
