Jail academy in the offing

RAJSHAHI: The long-cherished jail training academy, first kind of it in the country, is going to be set up in the city aims at meeting the demands of time and decades as well, reports BSS.
The existing jail guard training centre will be transformed into a full-fledged academy at a cost of around Taka 73.43 crore. Inspector General of Prisons Brig Gen Syed Iftikhar Uddin revealed this while laying the foundation stone of the academy here on Friday. He added that necessary academic buildings will be constructed on the land of Rajshahi Central Jail. It will operate the academy through a separate administration.
Brig Iftikhar Uddin said upon its successful implementation the academy will have capacity to impart training to more than 250 jail guards at a time.
The jail guards shall have knowledge about how to behave with the prisoners and how they will protect their human rights, he added. The jail guards should start their profession with a positive attitude and stand against all anti-social activities. Besides, the recruits should hold on to their ethics and values and keep up their efforts to ensure human rights. To this end, they need proper and effective training, he opined.
The IG Prisons also said the country’s jails are now being transformed into correction centers instead of only execution of sentence. He said the government has undertaken various projects for enhancement of the efficiency of the jail authorities. 
Besides, he said the government has adopted different programmes to help the prisoners to rehabilitate after ending their jail life. The inmates of jails are being provided vocational training for their self-employment and they manufacture various products having demands at home and abroad.
