Well ahead of the advent of winter, kitchen markets of Rajshahi have been flooded with winter vegetables.
It is learnt, from mid September to early October this year, winter vegetables like bean, radish, cauliflower, cabbage, Lau, Lal Sak, tomato, Palank (Spinach), Jhinga and Chichinga are being sold in the markets of the city.
The farmers, who have cultivated those vegetables, are also happy by getting a satisfactory price of those. Being profitable in compared to farming of other crops, farmers are being increasingly interested in vegetable cultivation.
Farmers informed, due to bumper production and a fair price, they are earning a good profit by selling vegetables.
In the local markets like Shaheb Bazaar, Lal Sak is being sold at Tk. 15 to 20 per kilogramme, Palanksak at 25 to 30, cauliflower at 20 to 30, cabbage at 20 to 25, Kakrol at 40, papaya at 15 to 20, bean at Tk. 40 to 60, tomato at 45 to 60, jhinga at 25, chichnga at 30, chalkumra (pumpkin) at 25 to 40 per piece and Lau (Gourd) at Tk. 20 to 40 per piece.
Salim Uddin, a vegetable vendor of Shaheb Bazaar kitchen market of the city, informed there has been a huge supply of winter-vegetables in Rajshahi from mid-September this year.
Already winter vegetables have been flooded the markets. There has been a huge demand of winter vegetables as well. The weather condition being favourable this, there was no damage of the vegetables in rain or flood resulting a plenty of advance-harvesting of winter vegetables even in the upazilas of the district, he added.
Mainul Islam, a customer at the same market, said the price of winter vegetables is very costly. There has been a huge difference between whole sale price and the retailer price. However; it was really amazing that people of the district are experiencing the taste of winter vegetables well ahead of winter this year.
Monimul Haque, a farmer of Rajabari village under Godagari upazila of the district, informed that he cultivated tomato on two bighas of land at a cost of Tk. 12,000. Already he has sold 10 maund of tomato at the rate of Tk. 1,300 per maund, next week he hoped to harvest 12 to 13 maunds of tomato and such harvesting will continue for next three months, he hoped.
Dulal Sarker, another farmer of Paba upazila, informed he has cultivated cauliflower and cabbage on five bighas of land. Already he started to sell those in the markets and getting a satisfactory price.
Minarul Islam, a farmer of the same area, said that he cultivated radish on a bigha of land at a cost of Tk 5,000. He has already sold radish worth taka 10,000 and hoped to sell 10,000 more worth of the same from the rest.
The farmers are getting a huge profit from their vegetables due to a satisfactory market price, he opined.
