Shaheed Dr Milon Day will be observed across the country today commemorating the 26th martyrdom anniversary of Dr Shamsul Alam Khan Milon, reports BSS.
On this day in 1990, Dr Milon was killed by the goons of military junta near Teacher-Student Centre (TSC) of Dhaka University at the height of anti-autocracy movement.
The supreme sacrifice of Dr Milon transformed the anti-autocracy movement into a mass upsurge that prompted the fall of the autocratic regime paving the way for restoration of democratic process in the country.
On the eve of the day, President M Abdul Hamid and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, in separate statements, recalled the supreme sacrifice of Dr Shamsul Alam Khan Milon for the cause of restoration of democratic system.
Different political parties, socio-cultural-professional bodies have chalked out elaborate programmes to observe Shaheed Dr Milon Day.
The programmes of the day include placing of wreaths and offering of special prayers at the grave of Dr Milon on Dhaka Medical College campus and at Milon Smrity Chattar (Square) near TSC.
Selina Akthar, mother of Dr Milon, is expected to take part in the programmes.
In observance of the day, Bangladesh Awami League has taken elaborate programmes. As part of the programme, leaders and workers will pay respect to Dr Milon by offering fathea and munajat at 7am at his grave.
Bangladesh Workers Party will place wreaths at Dr Milon's grave at 7.30am and Milon Smrity Chhattar at TSC at 8.30am
Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal (JSD) arranged a discussion on this occasion at Shaheed Colonel Taher auditorium at Bangabandhu Avenue today with Dhaka city coordinator of the party Mir Akthar Hossain in the chair. Among others, party secretary general Shirin Akthar addressed the function.
As a prominent, dedicated and honest organizer of the movement of the professionals, Dr Shamsul Alam Milon was the joint secretary of Bangladesh Medical Association (BMA), treasurer of Dhaka Medical College Teachers Association and a lecturer of Bio-chemistry Department of Dhaka College.
