Speakers at a discussion on Saturday stressed the need for coordinated efforts to end violence against women as it is an impediment to democracy, gender equality and human rights, reports UNB.
Bangladesh Nari Progati Sangha arranged the discussion on the campus of the Dhaka University.
DU Vice-Chancellor Prof AAMS Arefin Siddique said, “The society can never move forward where women are victims to violence. It’s matter of concern that in this modern age women are being victim to violence only for being women,” he said.
Prof Arefin Siddique stressed the need for spreading the education of gender equality in the society.
Country representative of UN Woman Christine Hunter said the women fall victim to violence, including sexual one, both at home and outside. “Their lives become unbearable for lack of security. The flourishment of women get hampered for repression.”
She stressed the need for united efforts to establish rights of women and urged the young generation to come forward in this regard.
