Fidel Castro’s death did not come as a shock as the iconic leader had been ailing for quite some time and had handed over power to the able hands of his brother and fellow revolutionary Raul Castro way back in 2008. Even so his leaving the mortal coils has saddened the hearts of countless millions not only in his beloved Cuba–indeed for many Castro was Cuba and Cuba was Castro– but also the rest of the world. In Bangladesh too he was a much admired figure. Bangladeshis remember with gratitude his steadfast support to the fledgling nation in the early 1970s. His deep personal rapport with the Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman is well-known.
Fidel Castro built a Communist state at the doorsteps of the mighty United States. Despite intense animosity from the superpower and stifling sanctions, Cuba under Castro’s guidance not only survived but also excelled in many sectors. The formerly impoverished state ensured food, shelter and education for every citizen, eradicated poverty and prostitution. The standard of the tiny country’s healthcare became a source of envy to the most developed of countries. Cuba also has become one of the sporting powerhouses of the world. Transforming Cuba from a playground for rich Americans into a symbol of resistance to Washington, Castro outlasted as many as nine US presidents in power. He fended off a CIA-backed invasion at the Bay of Pigs in 1961 as well as countless assassination attempts. After the fall of the Berlin wall even as communist states collapsed across the world, Castro kept the red flag flying right on the doorstep of the United States.
Fidel Castro was one of those rare individuals who played a pivotal role in changing the course of history. The El Commandante was magnificent orator who instinctively altered his cadence to fit the moment. He was larger than life in more ways than one. Tall and physically imposing, simple yet stylish in his attire, he embodied the revolutionary spirit. Unlike many leaders Fidel Castro never allowed statues of him to be erected or streets to be named after him, saying he did not want a cult of personality. Little was known about Castro's personal life but even among his critics, no one accused him of using power for personal gain. His tastes tended toward the ascetic.
The world will remember the great leader.
