Jatiya Sangsad (JS) Speaker Dr Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury yesterday called for creating women-friendly environment everywhere, including workplaces, reports BSS.
"Only bringing women in work is not enough. Ensuring women-friendly environment in workplaces and other spheres is required to expedite development of women," she said while speaking as chief guest at the fourth reunion of Dhaka University (DU) Rokeya Hall Alumni Association at TSC auditorium in the capital.
Presided over by Rokeya Hall Alumni Association President Dr Raoshan Ara Firoze, the function was also addressed by General Secretary of the association Mariam Begum and Rokeya Hall Provost Prof Dr Nasrin Ahman, said an official release. Speaking on the occasion, he urged
all to come forward and be united to prevent evil politics pushing the country into darkness.
Pro Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr Nasrin Ahmad and President of Dhaka University Alumni Association and noted Industrialist A K Azad attended as the special guests in the inaugural function, presided over by Rokeya Hall Alumni Prof Dr Raoshan Ara Firoze. More than thousand of students participated in the reunion programme.
Speaker Shirin Sharmin suggested ensuring all other facilities for women along with education for their advancement and stressed involving women with information technology in particular.
She called for involving women in the mainstream of development and further increasing their participation in parliament.
She recalled the contribution of Begum Rokeya to women development and said the great lady could realize the need of education for development of women.
The Speaker said Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina is also working for welfare of women and a congenial atmosphere for women is prevailing in Bangladesh.
Earlier, DU Vice-Chancellor (VC) Professor AAMS Arefin Siddique inaugurated the daylong reunion at the same venue.
Meanwhile, DU VC Professor AAMS Arefin Siddique in his speech urged everyone to be united and come forward for preventing evil politics what pushes the country into
darkness. He said, "The country is passing through the situation -where a group is trying to move the country into right track ...but some particular quarters are trying to push
the country into darkness which needs to be resisted".
The problem is not persisting only in the developing countries ...but it is prevailing in the developed countries also, he said.
Pro Vice Chancellor Professor Dr Nasrin Ahmad and President of Dhaka University Alumni  Association and noted Industrialist A K Azad attended as the special guests while Rokeya Hall Alumni Association President Professor Dr Rawshan Ara Feroz presided over the function.
Dr Arefin said those who are being carried out repression on the people in home and abroad in the name of only religion which need to be checked.
On behalf of the Rokeya hall alumnae association, former seven students of the Dhaka University were awarded for their contribution to the society.
Seven former students of Rokeya Hall have been honored on the occasion for their contributions to the society. They are Sayeeda Khanam, Fahmida Khatun, Maleka Begum, Laila Hasan, Rafia Akhtar Dolly, Sabina Yasmin and Jinat Barkatullah.
