Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) security consultant Major (retd) Hossain Imam yesterday termed the threat on South Africa fast bowler Wayne Parnell from a anonymous caller was just a mere prank or a hoax call.
The South African team management also played down the significance of the call terming it prank but the BCB took the matter seriously and made an investigation through the Bangladesh’s security agencies.
“For the time being we are considering it as a prank or hoax call but the security agencies are on the job to trace the call,” Major (retd) Hossain Imam said. “The hotel authority was ordered not to put through any call to any player’s room without sorting out the identity.”
Parnell reported the threat hours before the first Twenty20 international against Bangladesh on Sunday after he had received a phone call in his hotel room from a landline.
“The call was put through to Wayne’s room on the day of the T20 but we thought it was probably a prank or a hoax call, we didn’t think too seriously of it,” team manager Mohammed Moosajee said.
