Rajshahi Kings brought high flying Rangpur Riders down to the earth, thrashing them by 12 runs in a BPL-4 match yesterday at Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium. Mohammad Mithun continued his rich vein of form by hitting 36 ball-64 not out but his stellar effort wasn’t enough to save the side against a team whose bowlers put up a disciplined bowling show throughout the game.
Kings captain Darren Sammy made a whirlwind 44 not out off 18 as his side piled up 162 for five after which the bowlers restricted Riders to 150 for five to earn the team’s third victory in the tournament. In fact the
BPL-4 third phase started with Rangpur and Rajshahi match.
Until the carnage of Sammy, Rangpur bowlers lived up to their reputation in an amazing fashion to curb the aggression of the Kings batsmen. Off-spinner Sohag Gazi struck in the first over which he made his
regular job in fact, by trapping Mominul Haque lbw for four.
Sabbir Rahman played his usual aggressive brand of cricket to keep Rajshahi ahead as the side picked up 51 runs in the first powerplay. Left arm spinner Arafat Sunny however made the vital breakthrough with the wicket of Sabbir, bringing an end to the 47-run partnership between him and Junaid Siddique. Sabbir made 31 off 24, sending the ball across the ropes four times while smashed a six.
After the dismissal of Sabbir, Rangpur bowlers strangled the Rajshahi batsmen by propping up with disciplined bowling. While they bowled with nagging line and length, it also gave them rewards as the wickets were tumbling at regular interval.
With the side reeling to 92 for five in 14th over, Darren Sammy gave it a talismanic impetus by hitting a manic knock. His carnage ensured Rajshahi piling up 68 runs in the last five overs and threw a stiff challenge to Rangpur Riders. Sammy smacked three fours and four sixes in his knock.
Mehedi Hasan Miraj was the reason that Rangpur couldn’t go on berserk in the chase of a big total. Mehedi conceded just 18
runs in his four overs as Riders made just 25 runs in the first six overs. And it made the all difference.
As Nazmul Islam Opu made the breakthrough, with the wicket of opener Mohammad Shahzad, it came as a blessing in disguise for Riders. Mohammad Mithun came into the crease and gave the scoreboard a pace but Rajshahi bowlers struck back every time the Riders batsmen sensed the chance of dominating the bowlers.
However Mithun seemed to have played in different pitch as he scored runs at will, hitting the ball all corner of the park. But the support from other end wasn’t there. He smashed
three fours and four sixes in total. Nasir Jamshed was the other notable scorer for Rangpur with 27.
Nazmul Islam Opu claimed two for 19 and helped the side resist Riders batsmen alongside Mehedi Hasan Miraj.
