Sheikh Russel Krira Chakra made it a double over Mohamemdan Sporting Club with a 2-1 victory in the second leg of the Manyavar Bangladesh Premier Football League yesterday at the Bangabandhu National Stadium.
In the hard fought match, both the title contenders shared the ball possessions almost evenly but Russel scored two goals and Mohammedan could pull out one.
Mithun Chowdhury and Hemonto Vincent scored one goal each for Russel and Ismail Bangoura scored one goal in the eleventh hour for MSC.
After winning the match, Russel closed the gap with league leaders Jamal who are on top of the table with 30 points from 13 matches and Russel’s collection 26 from 12 matches. Despite conceding the defeat Mohammedan remained on second position with 26 points but they played one match than Russel.
In their previous encounter in the first-leg Sheikh Russel won the match by a solitary goal when defender Rezaul scored the all important goal in the Mohammedan dominated game.
Mohammedan, who had a struggling 2-1 victory over BJMC after playing under pressure for most of the time, had to suffer defeat on the day against Russel after being unbeaten seven matches in a row.
However, in the rain soaked ground, the Black and White looked aggressive enough from the initial minutes as they went very closer to take lead in the very seventh minute when a long range attempt of Masuk Mea Jony went out kissing the cross piece.
Sheikh Russel Krira Chakra, who are also in the title race, responded well on 15th minute with Zahid moved down the left side and released a cross inside the area and Zahid Hossain Emily’s header narrowly missed the cross piece.
Sheikh Russel took the lead through Mithun Chowdhury, though the captain had not any trouble to push the ball when Zahid Hossain made the path with a pin-pointed free kick just from some five meters away from the box (1-0).
Ibrahim after collecting a cross entered into the box and dribbled past two defenders and also edged past goalkeeper to open the space but shot the ball outside post to stun all.
Sheikh Russel, just throwing out the great threat, doubled the advantage two minutes later and this time Hemonto Biswas headed home a cross from Sohel Rana (2-0). Mohammedan had a solace when Ismail Bangoura converted a penalty after Waly Faisal handled the ball inside the area in the second last minute off four minutes injury periods (1-2).
