South Africa refused to be complacent despite sweeping the Twenty20 series by clean margin as they made their intention clear that they would go into the ODI series with high intensity.
The Proteas didn’t take any day off in their practice session like the India and Pakistan and started practice for the three-match ODI series right after the completion of the Twenty20 series. South Africa looked adapted well the condition and much to the surprise of the hosts, their spinners did better than their Bangladesh counterparts. South African batsmen who were believed to be vulnerable against spin, showed more technical acumen and audacity in this tough condition.
With Bangladesh playing consistent cricket in ODI format, the South Africa however remained worried about the backlash despite faring really well.
“We’ll have to see how the wicket is prepared in comparison to the T20s. I can’t imagine it being very different. I think if we apply our ODI basics as consistently as we can, then we can stand on a good chance. But playing Bangladesh on their home turf is really tough,” said Ryan Mclaren, the all-rounder of the team, who arrived in Dhaka on July 6 with Hashim Amla, Imran Tahir, Morne Morkel, Farhaan Berhardien to join with the rest of the squad.
It will be a comeback series for McLaren who, depending on his chance in the first ODI, would play his first match for the country since November, 2014. He said that it will be a challenging series for him.
“It’s a fresh start. I have had a few months off to work on a couple of things in my game. It’s new conditions. This is the first series in Bangladesh. It’ll be a tough series. They’ve played a lot of good cricket against India. On a personal front, I’m looking forward to playing for South Africa again,” he added.
The absence of AB de Villiers who is given rest to be sided with his wife, expecting a baby, would hurt South Africa but the Proteas are confident that they would do their job properly without him.
“We’ll miss him. He is a freak of nature. We love him having him as our leader and captain. He has an important priority at home and we have to make do without him. Simple as that,” the Kimberley-born Mclaren said, adding, “You’ll never replace AB. He is a special player. He has been our leader for such a long time. Obviously he has been an incredible batsman over the years.”
About Imran Tahir, Proteas’ all-rounder who is experienced to play IPL, said, “He has been our No 1 spinner in ODI cricket. He has done really well over the years. He is more experienced in these conditions as well. He’ll be vital for us in middle phases. But you can use him in any time of the innings.”
He said that they took the wait and see approach about the new rules of ODI cricket.
“We don’t know, we are waiting to see. Every team will have a different opinion on that. In the beginning it will be a trial and error method and see how everyone approaches it. From a bowling point of view, you don’t have to have catchers. You can put them in slightly different positions in the first ten overs,” he believed.
