‘Payer Awaj Pawa Jay’ completes 40 yrs of its journey

Theatre (Baily Road), a renowned theatre troupe in the country, is going to celebrate the 40th anniversary of their much-acclaimed production based on our Liberation War titled ‘Payer Awaj Pawa Jay’. As a part of the celebration 174th show of the play will be staged today in the Neelima Ibrahim Auditorium of Mahila Samity in the capital’s Baily Road. Four decades ago on this day, this epoch making play ‘Payer Awaj Pawa Jay’, written by Syed Shamsul Haq and directed by Abdullah Al-Mamun, was premiered on the premises of Mahila Samity.
Soon after the play was staged, it could generate huge interest among the audience because of its literary quality, theme and overall production excellence. Within one year the play celebrated golden jubilee which happened to be the first in Bangladesh. Presently, the casts of the play includes Ferdausi Majumdar, Keramat Mowla, Tofa Hossain, Tropa Majumdar, Maruf Kabir, Paresh Acharjee, Samar Dev, Khurshid Alam, Nurul Islam Sunny, Rashedul Awal Shaon, Joardar Saif, Tamanna Islam, Runa Laila, Tanvir Hossain Samdani, Kalyan Chowdhury, Tanjum Ara Palli, Kaowar Rajib, Atiqur Rahman and Ershad Hasan.
Besides them, nearly eighty actors participated in the play over these years among whom Abdullah Al-Mamun, Mohammad Zakaria, Zahirul Haq, Abdul Quader, Tariq Anam Khan, Mita Chowdhury, Tarana Halim, Rekha Ahmed, Khairul Alam Sabuj, Ariful Hoq, Kazi Tamanna, Golam Rabbani, Jhuna Chowdhury, Tabibul Islam Babu, Afroza Basnu, Shireen Bakul, Shanta Islam, Taukir Ahmed, Asif Munier are worth mentioning.
So far the play had 173 stage shows Ferdausi Majumdar happens to be the only actor who performed in all the shows. Keramat Mowla who was a performer on the opening night has joined again to perform regularly. To note, in 1981, two stage shows of the play were held at the 5th Third World Theatre Festival in Seoul, South Korea on March 20. Again, it was the first play from Bangladesh staged in a foreign country keeping aside India. A meaningful staging of the play was held at the National Martyrs’ Memorial, Savar on March 25 in 1987. The 100th show of the play was held on March 23 in 1990.
