Couple held with firearms

Members of Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) arrested a couple and recovered two firearms and 51 rounds of bullets from their possession at Parsekhali village in Shymnagar upazila yesterday morning. They are identified as Motaher Gazi, 40, an alleged forest robber and his wife Hasina Khatun, of the village.
Enaeyet Hossen, additional superintendent of police of RAB-6, said based on secret information the elite force conducted a raid at the house of Motaher and detained the couple when they were trying to flee away. They also recovered two firearms and 51 rounds of bullets. Later, they were handed over to Shyamnagar police.
‘Barapukuria coal mine
contributes to economy’
DINAJPUR: Primary and Mass Education Minister Mostafizur Rahman yesterday said Barapukuria coal mine is making a significant contribution to the economic development of the country, reports BSS.
“Barapukuria coal mine has changed fates of the people improving their living standard,” he told a function for distribution of financial grant in Barapukuria coal mine in Parbatipur upazila.
“We have to accept some damages, if we want to make good progress in the country. The present government is committed to take appropriate initiatives to minimise damages for implementing any bigger development project,” he added.
Managing Director of Barapukuria Coal Mining Company Engineer SMN Aurangajeb, among others, addressed the function with general manager of the company Abdul Mannan Patwari in the chair.
Three factory owners fined
NATORE: A mobile court of Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) yesterday fined three factory owners Tk 250000 for making and selling adulterated molasses in Lalpur upazila, reports BSS.
RAB-5 Commander Mijanur Rahman said on a tip-off, a team of the elite force led by Assistant Commissioner (land) Abu Taher conducted a raid at Walia village in Lalpur upazila yesterday morning and held Moniruzzaman, Abdul Khalek and Abu Bakar Siddique, all hailed from the same upazila, with 36 kilograms of fake molasses. Moniruzzaman was fined Tk 100000, Abdul Khalek Tk 100000 and Abu Bakar Siddique Tk 50000.
4 held with yaba in Dinajpur
DINAJPUR: Police held four persons with 491 pieces of yaba tablets in the district yesterday, reports BSS. Police said they arrested a youth, Shajahan, 27, hailed from Bogra Sadar upazila, with 311 pieces of yaba tablets at Gharaghat in Birampur upazila.
In another drive, police arrested Abdus Salam, 24, Munjurul Islam, 25 and Sarwar Hossain, 40, with 180 pieces of yaba tablets from their possessions.
Four cases were filed in this regard.
15 shops gutted in Laxmipur
Laxmipur: Fifteen shops were gutted in a fire that broke out at Poddar Bazar in Sadar upazila on Wednesday, reports UNB.
Fire brigade officials said the fire originated from a gas cylinder at a shop and soon engulfed the adjoining shops.
On information, two firefighting units went to the spot and extinguished the blaze after two hours of efforts, said Station Oofficer of Laxmipur Fire Service Monayem Billah.
The affected shops owners claimed that the extent of losses caused by the fire would be around Tk one crore.
Child found dead
SATKHIRA: Police recovered the body of an unidentified child from a shrimp enclosure at Utholi village in Tala upazila on Wednesday night, reports BSS.
Being informed, a team of police from Tala Police Station rushed to the spot and recovered the floating body from the enclosure around 7pm. Later, the body was sent to hospital morgue for autopsy.
