Ramgati upazila fisheries department yesterday distributed over Tk 17.50 lakh among the families of the fishermen who have lost their lives while fishing.
Under the programme each of the 35 fishermen families in the district will get Tk 50,000.
Local MP Abdullah Al Mamun distributed the cheques as chief guest while Ramgati UNO Delwar Hossain presided over the programme.
Assistant director Md Kamrul Hassan said the project was taken up by the government in 2012 to rehabilitation the families of fishermen who lost their lives while catching fish in the Meghna River and in the Bay of Bengal.
A total 16 districts, including Bhola, Noakhali, Laximpur, Jhalakathi, Jamalpur, Mymensingh, Patuakhali, Barisal, Barguna, Habiganj, Tangail , Gopalganj, Khulna, Chittagong, Cox’s Bazar and Sylhet, have been brought under the programme. Under the project 164 distressed fishing families will get the assistance this year.
