DCL President’s Cup tennis kicks off

Defending champions Naogaon Club will start as favourites in the Dhaka Club Limited President’s Cup National Tennis Tournament-2016 which kicked off at three different venues in the capital yesterday.

Twenty-seven clubs drawn from different part of the country are taking part in this above 35-year team event organised by Dhaka Club Limited (DCL), a leading social club of the country.
The State Minister for Foreign Affairs and President of Bangladesh Tennis Federation (BTF) Md Shahriar Alam inaugurated the tournament as chief guest. DCL President Syed Shahed Reza, who is also the Secretary General of Bangladesh Olympic Association, was present as special guest.
BTF President speaking on the occasion he expressed his solidarity with DCL programme and it would help development of tennis as the children of the participants would feel encourage to play the game. 
“You see we are currently holding a countrywide talent hunting programme at the initiative of the National Sports Council. Finally we will select 64 budding players for the national level camp,” said the BTF chief.
He mentioned the success of junior players in the recently held ITF Junior Tournament where two students of Viqarunnisa Noon School occupied the top position. “I hope more junior players of Bangladesh would shine in international circuit, if we could properly groom them.”
Shahed Reza said the champions and runners-up would receive cash award of Tk 50,000 and Tk 35,000 apart from trophies. This is for the third successive years DCL is organizing the tournament.
Shahzad Hamid, tournament director, conducted the opening ceremony.
