Thousands of homebound passengers are suffering due to inundation of gangway of Ilisha ferry terminal following the on rush of water from upper catchments and high tides.
Sources said the home-bound passengers have started arriving from Dhaka, Chittagong, Comilla and other parts of the country for celebrating the upcoming Eid-ul-Fitr taking the Laxmipur-Bhola ferries.
But most of the time, Ilisha ferry terminal on the bank of River Meghna remains inundated for hours due to tidal water.
As a result, the ferry services are being hampered seriously and transports like passenger buses remain stranded for hours.
Abu Alam, Manager of Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Authority (BIWTA) at Ilisha ferry terminal said he informed the matter to the higher authority, but no measures have yet been taken.
At a views exchange meeting held at the Deputy Commissioners’ office on Monday importance was given to repairing of ferry terminals and stop plying of unfit launches for the safe journey of home bound passengers. At the time Deputy Commissioner Selim Reza urged the launch and bus owners not to overload their vehicles.
