BCL tarring governments accomplishments

The people of Mohakhali area, particularly the commuters and the pedestrians, witnessed an orgy of violence perpetrated by some members of the Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) Titumir College unit on July 6. A pictorial report on this appeared in different daily newspapers on July 7. The violence was mainly over the BCL youngsters eating from a restaurant without paying the bills. When the restaurant operators demanded payment of the bill the BCL chaps attacked them with sticks and other objects. They also  smashed at least 20 vehicles that remained parked in the area though their drivers and owners had no relationship with the restaurant incidents.
The untamed elements of BCL have been responsible for scores of similar incidents throughout the country in recent years. There are widespread allegations against them for killing, intimidation, tender manipulation, extortion, abduction for ransom, illegal admission business, drug business and what not. But the BCL activists seem to be possessed by an attitude that they risk nothing from law enforcers by indulging in such acts. Clearly, this is the root of the problem.
People witnessed with horror how an innocent youngster named Bishawjit was brutally hacked and beaten to death by some unruly members of BCL Jagannath University unit. A number of students lost their lives at the hands of BCL activities at Bangladesh Agricultural University (BAU) in Mymensingh, Shahjalal University of Science and Technology (SUST) in Sylhet, Jahangirnagar University and other educational institutions in the country. They even assaulted a number of heads of institutions and teachers as the latter did not succumb to their illegal demands.
The present government otherwise has an impressive score cards of achieving success in different areas of the country’s economy and polity. Through these achievements the government is earning the confidence of the people. For example, the government’s uncompromising stand in matters of taming the religious extremists and dark forces deserves special appreciation. But all of these achievements will be dwarfed in the minds of the people if it fails to rein in the unbridled high handedness and lawlessness unleashed by berserk members of the BCL in high profile incidents that make media headlines.
People want that government should make it abundantly clear to law enforcers that they must not treat the BCL chaps preferentially in cases where they would be seen as clearly violating the laws or engaging in crimes.
