HC questions MP Shawkat's bail in loan fraud cases

“The court has set December 7 for holding further hearing on the matter”

The High Court yesterday issued a rule asking the authorities concerned to explain in 10 days why it shall not revoke Nilphamari-4 lawmaker Shawkat Ali Chowdhury's bail in two cases lodged over loan fraud, reports BSS.
A High Court division bench comprising Justice M Enayetur Rahim and Justice JBM Hassan passed the order acting suo moto.
"The court has set December 7 for holding further hearing on the matter," said Barrister M Sarwar Hossain, counsel for Bangladesh Commerce Bank. 
November 24 was fixed for hearing on a rule issued on the bail plea of bank's managing director Dr Md Asaduzzaman and manager of its Bangsal branch Habibul Goni.
"During the hearing, counsels of both the accused told the court that the main accused of the loan scam, Shawkat, had been granted bail by the lower court. At this point, the court passed the order acting on its own motion," said Barrister Sarwar.
According to the lawyer, the capital of the bank is around Tk 200 crore, half of which has been embezzled by Shawkat and others. He drew this money through letters of credit in the name of three companies. Anti-Corruption Commission filed two cases against nine persons including Shawkat over the matter.
