Construction work of Uttara 3rd phase project, which was undertaken by 1999, would be completed by 2017, said Chairman of Rajdhani Unnayan Kartripakkho (RAJUK) M Bazlul Karim Chowdhury, reports BSS.
Talking to BSS, he said that the 95 per cent work of land and infrastructural development including roads and culverts under the project have already been finished.
About the utility services, the RAJUK chairman said WASA has already made site selection for installing deep tubewell while Dhaka Electricity Supply Co. (DESCO) is doing the electrification work of the project and electric poles have been partially installed in all sectors.
On a query, he said, work of water and electricity is expected to be completed by the middle of the next year.
Following the government decision, he said, liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) is an option for domestic household in the Uttara third phase.
With the completion of the work, Chowdhury said, it would reduce the pressure of population in Dhaka city by creating suburban accommodation. He said about 8.5- km lake developed in and around the project would maintain an environment friendly and sustainable atmosphere for dwellers.
RAJUK member (development) Md Abdur Rahman said there are 8,295 plots in the third phase. Of them, 6,620 residential plots have been handed over to the respective allottees. But the rest plots will be handed over gradually at the earliest possible time.
Of the total 165 km road, work on 140 km has been finished while the work on the remaining 25 km will be completed by December this year.
A total of 12 bridges will be constructed in the project area. Of them, 10 have been completed and the rest are now under construction.
The government undertook the project setting the period of 1999-2002 as the duration. The project cost was Tk 2044 crore which was later revised upward to Tk 2340 crore.
The Uttara third project of RAJUK that covers 2099.50 acres of land divided into four sectors - 15, 16, 17, and 18 - is situated at a distance of 20 km from zero point of Dhaka city.
Located on the western side of the Uttara Model Town (2nd phase) project it stretches the south by the Mirpur Cantonment and the west by Flood Protection Embankment through Mirpur-Ashulia.
The third phase of the Uttara Residential Project had been undertaken by then-Awami League government in 1999. But the project could not be completed even after 17 years.
