Yunnan to play important roles in LMC

If you are going to run 168.5 kilometers in under 36 hours, it might as well be through the sun-drenched autumn hills of western Yunnan. On November 18-19, An ultramarathon took on in west Yunnan's Mt Gaoligong. For an international group of 57 hardcore endurance athletes, that was exactly the plan as they gathered recently in Tengchong for the 2016 Mt Gaoligong Ultra. The ultramarathon's difficulty level was augmented by 8,800 meters of total elevation change. During the event, competitors were required to pass through 14 checkpoints as they traversed open fields, forested mountains and cobbled village streets along the racecourse. (GoKunming)

At any mention of Yunnan province, domestic and foreign participants felt close to this colourful land, and were full of expectations for further cooperation with the province under the Lancang-Mekong Cooperation(LMC) mechanism.

Yunnan has developed a long-standing friendship with Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar, Thailand and Vietnam in the Lancang-Mekong sub-region. All these countries have set up consulates general in Kunming. Moreover, Yunnan province has actively involved itself in the planning and implementation of sub-regional projects in various fields at different administrative levels. The province also has carried out pragmatic and fruitful exchanges and cooperation with these countries. Today, Yunnan plays a growing and important role in Lancang-Mekong cooperation, drawing greater attention from the other countries or the region.

Sha Zukang, former Under-Secretary-General of the United Nations, made plenty of preparations before attending the forum in Yunnan. He pointed out that Lancang-Mekong cooperation will promote and deepen the opening up of Yunnan and promote development at two levels.The South-South cooperation will help Yunnan province—a pivot of “Belt and Road” initiative—better exert its geographic advantage to facilitate the construction of the BCIM Economic Corridor, as well as the China, Laos and Thailand railway. At a regional level, Lancang-Mekong cooperation will help Yunnan and the Mekong River countries achieve bilateral and multilateral developments in their respective markets.

Peng Gang, deputy director of the Department of Asian Affairs at the Chinese Ministry of Commerce, said that the exposition and forum will provide a unique Yunnan-based programme for deepening the Lancang-Mekong cooperation mechanism. “I hope that the Lancang-Mekong cooperation mechanism will promote mutually beneficial cooperation in trade, direct investment, infrastructure development, industrial park construction and personnel training between the Lancang-Mekong countries. ” Peng Gang said.
