Two held, handbag of envoy recovered

STAFF REPORTER

The Detective Branch of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police yesterday recovered the stolen handbag of the Netherlands' ambassador to Bangladesh, Leoni Margaretha Cuelenaere, after arresting two men. She failed to find it while  inaugurating a photo exhibition at the Institute of Fine Arts of Dhaka University two days ago.

DMP sources said Rubel, 20, and Shaon, 20 were arrested after they were identified from a video footage.
All the contents of the ambassador's bag were seized from a mobile phone shop.   The detectives picked up Rubel from Shanir Akhra on the southern outskirts of the city at 9am.
Shaon was taken into custody from a mobile phone shop called "I touch" at Level- 5 of the Basundhara Shopping Mall.
Several others who resembled the two were questioned and let off, Abdul Baten, joint commissioner of the DMP, told reporters at a news briefing.
He said Rubel, a car driver, hails from Barisal. The Dutch ambassador was the chief guest at the function. She left her bag on the chair to light candles to inaugurate the function. When she returned to her seat, she found her bag missing. A case was filed and the DMP's Detective Branch was entrusted with the task of finding the bag and catching the culprit.
In a similar incident in 2004, DMP detectives had  tracked the snatchers of a handbag belonging to then Norwegian ambassador. The envoy was jogging in Gulshan, when the thieves from Demra followed her in a stolen car and sped away after snatching the handbag from the baffled ambassador. The detectives arrested the six snatchers by tracking them from her stolen mobile phone and the car.
