Amar Desh acting editor Mahmudur freed on bail

Amar Desh acting editor Mahmudur Rahman was freed on bail yesterday, three and a half years into his arrest in a case filed for publishing report in the daily relating to the Skype scandal in December 2012.

Jailer Md Nashir Ahmed said that Mahmudur Rahman was released around 1pm after completion of all necessary formalities.
The Amar Desh acting editor, a former energy adviser to a BNP-Jamaat government, remained incarcerated in connection with several cases since his arrest from his Karwan Bazar office on April 11, 2013. The arrest came four months after Mahmudur was sued, in line with a High Court directive, for publishing reports on a Skype conversation between former International Crimes Tribunal, Bangladesh (ICT,B) chairman Justice Md Nizamul Huq and an expatriate Bangladeshi legal expert, Ahmed Ziauddin, over the war crimes trial of Jamaat leaders.

Mahmudur was shown arrested in more than 70 cases and he secured bail in all of them from the court.
On November 1, the Supreme Court upheld a High Court order granting bail to Mahmudur in a case filed for an alleged attempt to abduct and murder Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s son Sajeeb Wazed Joy. A five-member Appellate Division bench headed by Chief Justice Surendra Kumar Sinha upheld Mahmudur’s bail, dismissing a government petition seeking a stay on the HC order.
Following a bail petition filed by him, the HC on September 7 granted him a permanent bail in the murder attempt case. The government challenged the HC order. However, the apex court finally upheld the HC order paving Mahmudur’s release from the jail.
