Narayanganj City Corporation (NCC) Mayor Selina Hayat Ivy yesterday tendered resignation from her post to vie for the local government body’s upcoming election scheduled for December 22.
She sent her resignation letter to the minister for Local Government, Rural Development and Cooperatives after concluding her last working day at the NCC office around 3pm.
Talking to reporters, Ivy, also a vice-president of the party's Narayanganj unit, expressed hopes that the party activists would forget their differences and work together to bring home the polls results.
Referring to her development activities during her five year tenure, Ivy said the residents of Narayanganj would evaluate her successes and failures.
“I can tell you one thing that I have tried my best…. I have never cheated in my work. I even risked my life while working as the mayor but did not bow to any evil forces,” she said. Ivy said she worked for the truth and protested anything unjust and that she had to face humiliation for her traits.
She urged the city dwellers to give her another opportunity to serve them better considering her past deeds and honesty. “I want to serve you again and you can give me that opportunity…I hope that you will stay beside me and pray for me,” she said.
Asked about the absence of ruling party leaders and activists beside her, Ivy requested journalists not to pin pricks in this connection and said everyone would work together once the time comes.
Talking on the meeting with Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in presence of local lawmaker Shamim Osman, Ivy said the PM gave directives to all to work together in favour of the party candidate in the NCC polls.
Meanwhile, BNP mayoral aspirant for NCC polls Advocate Shakhawat Hossain Khan yesterday collected nomination paper to run the election. Shakhawat along with two former lawmakers Advocate Abul Kalam and Muhammad Gias Uddin went to the office of the returning officer of NCC election and purchased the nomination paper, a day before the deadline for the submission of nomination papers.
After collecting the nomination paper, the BNP mayoral aspirant demanded the Election Commission (EC) should ensure a level playing field for all the contestants so that BNP activist-leaders will not face any sort of obstruction during the election campaign. Shakhawat also pledged to build Narayanganj as a ‘Model City Corporation’, if elected.
He also urged the district administration to withdraw its corrupt officials and carry out drives to seize illegal arms from political cadres ahead of the election.
Replying to a query, he said his nomination for the mayoral race will not split the unity of city unit BNP as party chief Khaleda Zia picked him in consultation with other senior leaders of the district.
Shakhawat said all senior leaders of Narayanganj, including Taimur Alam Khandaker and Muhammad Gias Uddin, and party activists greeted him for getting the BNP’s nomination and promised to give him full support during the electioneering.
