Myanmar envoy summoned

Dhaka vents deep concern

DIPLOMATIC CORRESPONDENT

The government has expressed its deep concern at the continued deteriorating situation in the Rakhine State of Myanmar due to the ongoing actions of the Myanmar Armed Forces causing dire consequences to the people there and its implications for Bangladesh.

Secretary (Bilateral & Consular) of the Foreign Ministry Kamrul Ahsan made Bangladesh’s concern known after Myanmar Ambassador to Dhaka Myo Myint Than was summoned to his office yesterday.

When approached after the meeting, the Myanmar envoy declined to make any comments.
“We expressed our concern over the development on the other side of the border. We demanded that they should create a congenial environment so that people can return to their own villages and there should not be any incidents of looting, burning and raping. That was our position,” Secretary Ahsan told a small group of reporters after the meeting.
When asked about the reply from the Myanmar envoy, he said, “As usual, they said these are fabricated.”
Meanwhile, according to a foreign ministry press release, the secretary informed the ambassador that desperate people from the Rakhine State are entering into Bangladesh on humanitarian grounds seeking safety and shelter across borders.
“Despite our border guards’ sincere effort to prevent the influx, thousands of distressed Myanmarese citizens including women, children and elderly people continue to cross border into Bangladesh.  Thousands more have been reported to be gathering at the border crossing,” it said.
Ahsan requested Myanmar to assist Bangladesh to ensure the integrity of its border to prevent influx of people from the Rakhine State into Bangladesh, said the release, adding that he also protested against the tendency in the Myanmar media seeking to implicate Bangladesh into the incidents in Myanmar.
He also urged Myanmar to give due consideration to the demand from the international community to conduct impartial investigation of the alleged  indiscriminate and disproportionate use of force and human rights violation during the ongoing  military operation in the  Rakhine State and stressed that  rule of law and due judicial process should be allowed to function without let or hindrance.
Meanwhile, Foreign Secretary Shahidul Haque said that the government is dealing with the Rohingya issues as a responsible government should.
“Some moves are visible while some are not,” he said replying to a volley of questions regarding the issue at a briefing organised to address different purposes.
Haque also said that communications on behalf of the prime minister have been made through diplomatic channels with the president and state councillor of Myanmar.
The problem lies in Myanmar and it should be resolved in there, he said.
Replying to a question, the foreign secretary hinted that Dhaka is in touch with the international community to put pressure on Myanmar to resolve the crisis.
