Man ‘commits’ suicide
A mentally challenged elderly man allegedly committed suicide by jumping under a speeding train at Moshioli in Sadar upazila on Tuesday afternoon.
The deceased was identified as Sultan Sheikh, 54, son of late Ibrahim Sheikh, a resident of Moshiali village.
Locals said Sultan was a mentally challenged person. Quoting witnesses, police said Sultan jumped under a Khulna-bound train crossing the area around 5pm and died on the spot.
13 hurt in Ctg road accident
At least 13 people were injured when a city bound passenger bus collided head on with a Patiya bound microbus at city's Shah Amanat bridge area of Bakalia thana yesterday morning.
The injured were admitted to Chittagong Medical College Hospital (CMCH) said Abul Moonsur, officer in charge of Bakalia thana. The condition of an unidentified bus passenger is critical, police outpost of CMCH sources said. Police said the accident occurred when a city bound Shyamoli Transport passenger bus from Cox's bazaar collided head on with a Patiya bound micro bus at city's Shah Amanat bridge area of Bakalia thana at 7 am today that left 13 microbus passengers received injuries.
Locals and police rescued the injured people and sent them to the different hospitals.
2 held with yaba tablets in Ctg
Narcotic Control Department (NCD) of Chittagong arrested a mini truck driver and its helper with 12,000 pieces of contraband yaba tablets from city's Ekkilometer area under Chandgaon thana yesterday morning.
The arrested were identified as driver Mohammad Abdur Rahim,31 and helper Azim Miah,26. Acting on a tip-off, a team of NCD detained the mini truck driver and its helper from Ekkilometer area under Chandgaon thana at about 6 am and recovered the yaba from the oil tanker of the vehicles, said NCD Deputy Director Aslam Hossain Chowdhury. The arrested persons confessed to the NCD team that they brought the yaba tablets from Cox's Bazar for selling those in the port city. A case was filed with Chandgaon Thana under Narcotics Control Act in this connection.
27 fishermen detained
District fishery department with the help of river police detained 27 fishermen and seized 20,000 meters current net from Kalabadar, Arial Kha and Meghna Rivers of the region on Tuesday night.
The arrestees were from different areas of Hizla and Mehendiganj upazila, said additional superintendent of district river police Abdul Motaleb. Bimal Chandra Das, district fishery officer (Hilsa), said the arrestees produced before the mobile court led by Nazmul Ahsan, executive magistrate of district administration on Tuesday. The court sentenced Munir Hossain and Mamun Haoladar to 15-month imprisonment and fined 18 others Tk, 5,000 each.
The seized thickly knotted 'current net' used for netting Jatka (Hilsa fry) were asked by the court to be burnt, the fishery officer told. The operation to save Jatka would be continued for increasing Hilsa resources in the country, he added.
Blankets distributed in Ctg
Sursyogiri Ashrom of Maizbhandari Gausia Hoque Committee on Tuesday distributed blankets and money among the destitute and gave health consultancy to 450 people in Chittagong.
In a programme arranged for accord reception to Maizbhandari Marami Gosthi’s Egypt Tour and discussion in memory of Zia-ul- Haque Maizbhandari.
In the day long programme a total of 150 blankets were distributed, medical consultancy were given to 450 people, Tk100,000 distributed to 10 poor families to build home and Tk50,000 was given to two poor father to arrange marriage for his daughter.
The programme was inaugurated by Professor YM Zafar. In chair principal Ln Barun Kumar Archarjee (Balay), chief guest was Professor Dr Abdul Manan Chowdhury, chief speaker Dr Selim Jahangir while special guest Moulana Shaesta Khan Al Azahari, Md Abul Masur, Omar Faruk, Samir Das and Mohammad Ali Chowdhury, among others, were present.
