The Barisal City Corporation (BCC) formally handed over 108 ‘Safe Food Cart (SFC)’ to the trained vendors at a ceremony on Tuesday afternoon with the aim of providing safe street food to city dwellers BCC authority under the government project of Improving Food Safety (IFS) in Bangladesh handed the food carts with a view to make sure they are selling food in a hygienic way.
The project was funded by the Government of Netherlands. Food and Agricultural Organisation (FAO), UN and Health and Family Welfare Ministry of Bangladesh were partner of this IFS programme.
After successfully launching of 500 SFCs at Khulna and 600 SFCs at Dhaka North and South City Corporations, the programme was launched at BCC in primary level, said Sridhar Dharmapuri, senior officer for food safety and nutrition programme of FAO at Bangladesh, in the programme.
A base line survey on street food vending situation in Barisal City Corporation area was conducted on August 2016 by a team from FAO of UN and BCC and 230 vendors were included in that survey.
Total 230 vendors received two days training on Good Hygiene Practices (GHP) and provided certificate. Among them 108 vendors received SFCs at the first phase and rest 122 vendors will receive SFCs within next six months.
BCC Mayor Ahsan Habib Kamal said it will help improving the hygienic quality of vending street food and practice of the consumers as well as scenario of the street food vending in the city.
