Students of Rajshahi University (RU) formed a human chain on the campus yesterday to protest the persistent oppression and ‘mass killings’ of Rohingya minorities in the northern Rakhine State of Myanmar.
They also announced to stage demonstration today in front of university main gate.
Around 300 students from different departments of RU took part in the human chain programme in front of the RU central library around 12:30pm with placards and festoons written to stop genocide against Rohingya Muslim minorities, urging the United Nations and global human rights bodies to mount pressure on Myanmar government immediately to stop the massacre and violence against the Rohingya people.
The programme was conducted by Finance department 4th year student Shariful Islam Piyal while Statistics department student Mahmudul Hasan, History department student Naeem Reza, Social work student Mahfuz and Marketing department student Tayeb Hossain addressed the programme. They also seek Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s intervention by providing temporary shelter to thousands of ethnic Rohingya minorities in Bangladesh.
The protesters also demanded cancellation of Nobel Peace Prize that was conferred on the Myanmar leader Aung San Suu Kyi, as she failed to play a tangible role in curbing the violence against the Rohingya people of Rakhine state.
