Disaster management and relief minister Mofazzal Hossain Chowdhury Maya yesterday said that the government, along with the International Federation of Red Cross (IFRC), would create awareness about natural disasters among 50 lakh people.
The IFRC plans to create awareness among one billion people about natural calamities.
“Bangladesh has declared its solidarity with the IRFC’s call to build awareness about natural disasters among one billion people. As part of the initiative, the government will launch measures to create awareness among 50 lakh people about calamities,” said Maya.
He was speaking at an event after releasing World Disaster Report 2016 in the city yesterday. This year’s theme of the report is “Resilience-saving live today, investing for tomorrow”.
A directive had been given to the Bangladesh representative to the United Nations to sign the initiatives, Maya said.
Bangladesh Red Crescent Society (BRCS) vice-chairman Habib-e Millat, BRCS secretary general BMM Majharul Haque, IFRC Bangladesh chief Azmat Ullah, IFRC senior adviser Ali Ahmed and BRCS deputy secretary general Khondaker Zakaria Khaled, among others, also spoke at the programme.
Volunteers in coastal areas had been working to protect people and their properties from natural disasters with the BRCS under the Cyclone Preparedness Programme, the minister said.
“The government has taken initiatives to turn these volunteers into a modern force by providing proper training and instruments. They have to work risking their lives during natural calamities,” Maya noted.
The government was contemplating providing financial honorarium to volunteers during disasters, he added.
“The government has taken initiatives to construct Mujib Killa in coastal areas to save people during disasters,” the minister said. He also requested the IFRC to ramp up its investment to protect the coastal people of Bangladesh during natural calamities.
