As large number of vacancies for teachers in primary schools across Narsingdi district remains unaddressed, most of the institutions have been struggling to coordinate the lessons and ensure quality of education for long. According to a report in this newspaper yesterday, 563 teaching posts remain vacant in the district.
Education is one of the basic human rights as enshrined in Article 26 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. But how many people do enjoy this right in the country remains a question. The overall scenario in the educational arena in the country does not show much promise. Primary education is the foundation for the future grooming up of a student. If it is based on a weak foundation, it will jeopardize the entire educational life of a student.
When the government has taken various measures for promoting education in the country, including female education, the school dropout problem is a matter of concern. It is clear as the daylight that quality education eludes the children belonging to underprivileged classes. Many primary schools in remote rural areas lack infrastructural facilities and competent teachers, hampering education. Competent teachers do not want to stay at schools situated in outlying areas on various pretexts and get transferred to schools of their choice. This tendency is utterly deplorable. The government must compel the teachers to serve at schools where they are posted. The dodging teachers should be brought under discipline.
Children from urban areas as well as from remote rural areas should enjoy the equal facility of education. There should not be any discrimination in matters of receiving quality education. The way IT sector is developing in the country, the persons versed in this sector will contribute immensely to the economic growth of the country.
Only by receiving the right kind of education a person can explore the job market and get established in professional life. In this way, he/she can improve their economic conditions and contribute to the overall development of the country. Government has announced a number of incentives, including midday meal and some financial incentives, to lure students to come to schools. These measures should be strengthened further.
Quality education should not be confined to a section of elite class rather it will have to be disseminated to the larger section of the people. There should not be any compromise regarding quality education as it concerns country’s future development and economic prosperity and wellbeing. Concerted efforts of government, teachers, students, guardians and community leaders are needed for ensuring quality primary education.
