Awami League President and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina yesterday directed Narayanganj party veteran Shamim Osman to work in favour of party nominated candidate Selina Hayat Ivy in the upcoming Narayanganj City Corporation (NCC) polls slated for December 22. The AL chief came up with the directive at a meeting with Narayanganj local leaders at her official residence Ganabhaban. The meeting was held to minimise the gulf of differences between Ivy and Osman, also a ruling party lawmaker.
After the meeting, party General Secretary Obaidul Quader said that the party chief has directed the local unit of the party in Narayanganj to work in favour of the party-backed mayoral candidate.
AL Joint General Secretary Dipu Moni, who was present at the meet, quoted Hasina as saying, “As the chief of the party, I have taken the decision to nominate Ivy for the Narayanganj city polls and every AL leader should accept the party decision if they want to do politics with me.”
Awami League wants to bag the mayoral slot in the city by holding a free, fair and credible election, she added. Earlier, the prime minister asked Osman and Ivy to meet her to discuss the prevailing situation in Narayanganj city, party insiders said. Other senior party leaders were also present at the meeting. Incumbent NCC Mayor Selina Hayat Ivy secured the AL nomination for the city polls in a meeting of the AL’s local government nomination board last week. Ivy has recently been made THE AL’s Narayanganj district unit vice president. In the maiden Narayanganj city corporation election held in 2011, Ivy defeated AL’s mayoral candidate Shamim Osman.
