The High Court yesterday directed police to arrest in 72 hours the accused of the two cases filed over stalking of two girls and grievously injuring their father in Kaliganj upazila of Jhenaidah. The HC also directed the authorities concerned to submit a report by November 27 after arresting the accused, Md Kamal, general secretary of Kashthabhanga union unit of Juba League and UP member of Kaliganj, and his associates. Home secretary, inspector general of police, Jhenaidah deputy commissioner and its superintendent of police, Kaliganj UNO and its police officer-in-charge have been asked to submit reports by November 27 after complying with the arrest order.
Before passing the order, the High Court bench commented that it cannot allow the Juba League man roaming freely after committing such crimes. In a suo moto move, the HC bench comprising Justice Quazi Reza-Ul Hoque and Justice Mohammad Ullah issued the directive following a report published in a bangla daily on Tuesday under the headline, ‘Dui pa gechhe, ekhon bhitechhara howar bhoy’ (Lost two legs, now fearing eviction from home) that said Kamal and his cohorts, who were stalking two sisters, beat up the victims’ father Shahanur with iron rods and hammers and broke his both legs at Nalbhanga under Kaliganj on October 16. The alleged stalkers beat up Shahnur causing serious injury after he protested stalking of his daughters. The injured man is currently undergoing treatment at National Institute of Traumatology and Orthopaedic Rehabilitationin Dhaka where his legs had to be amputated from knees. Shahnur’s brother Mahinur and relative Md Yakub Ali filed two cases with Senior Judicial Magistrate Court accusing sixteen and seven people respectively. Police have so far arrested two in connection with the cases and the rest are absconding.
