Agitated students of Barisal BM College yesterday blocked a road in front of the college for an hour demanding to resume construction work of a college hostel.
Sohag Das, one of the organisers of the agitation programme, alleged that the construction of four-story Kobi Jibanananda Chhatrabash at the cost of Tk 3.1 crore had begun in 2011.
However, the construction work stopped long days ago and even ground floor of the hall yet to be competed in last five years.
Repeated prayers for speeding up the construction work gave them no result till this report, except increasing the sufferings to the students, he added.
In this situation, students of the college brought out a procession and held a rally blocking the main road in front of the campus by setting tires on fire about 10am
As police failed to resume traffic on the road, Prof SM Imanul Hakim, principal of the college, rushed to the spot to control the situation but students engaged in altercation with him.
However, principal assured them immediate resuming of the work and speeding up the construction work of the student hall to end their sufferings and solving accommodation problem.
Later, students returned the campus withdrawing their demonstration.
Monirul Islam, contractor of the hall construction work, said he purchased the work-order from the original contractor Atik Construction. The work has been stopped as authority not paying part-bill of the work as per rules.
Principal of the college acknowledging the facts said he continuously giving reminders to the authorities concerned to solve the problem but yet to get any result.
