No logic except appeasing India

BNP leader on Rampal power plant

BNP standing committee member Dr Khandaker Mosharraf Hossain yesterday said there is no logic behind setting up Rampal power plant except appeasing India.
He made the remark while addressing a seminar, `Rampal Power Plant Construction-Sundarbans Facing Challenges`, organised by All Community Forum (ACF) at the Jatiya Press Club in the capital.
The BNP leader also warned the contractors and other agencies involved in the project about its future saying the current government will not be there in power for ever. “This project will be rolled back when an elected government of mass people will come to power,” he said. He pointed out that the Indian government rejected a proposal for setting up such plants in India, but the Bangladesh government has to allow such anti-environment project due to its subservient foreign policy.
Criticising the government’s campaign in favour of the Rampal power plant through electronic and print media, he said some people were hired for advocating for the project despite its dangerous aspects. “But the negative impact on the environment is inevitable as dirty fuel coal will be used in the project will cause huge emission,” he said.
Mosharraf said this emission and fly ash will destroy the flora and fauna of the Sundarbans. “This forest is very important for Bangladesh as it protects the country from natural calamities like cyclone.” The BNP leader said if the country needs electricity, then the Indian company should set up similar projects in India from which Bangladesh could import electricity.
Dr Mosharraf also criticised the government for not being able to sign any contract for the spent fuel management of Rooppur nuclear power project.
