Give him 50 days..!

ROBERT CLEMENTS

Prime Minister Modi in an impassioned and emotional speech has asked the people of India to give him 50 days. Fifty days by which he would prove his move of demonetization of the five hundred and thousand rupee note, the hardship of millions of people, all, would not be in vain!
I believe, we need to give him those fifty days!
From time immemorial we Indians talk about corruption, and from time immemorial, we Indians, you and me, in big ways and little ways indulge in the same corruption. I remember a religious man, who preached in church on Sundays once telling me about the house he had bought, “I paid thirty percent in black!” he said.
I looked at him, and wondered whether he didn’t realize his Sunday sermon about corruption should have been delivered not to his congregation but to himself.
In his mind, he thought that instead of fighting the system, let me follow the system.
Most of us have done the same. We don’t like the fact, maybe, that we are doing wrong, but we feel we have to do it.
Suddenly, a man in the form of Modi, says, I am giving you a chance to stop doing this: Pay everything in white, through the bank and pay your taxes like everyone else!
Now about those taxes. Most taxes are paid correctly and diligently by service people, and others pay only what they want to pay. Our Chartered Accountants ask us every year, “How much do you want to show this year?” Which means how much tax do you want to pay. Since your banks anyway do not reflect your income since most money came to you in cash and you can declare what you want. Finally, the man who earns ten times more than you, pays much less than you in tax. Which means, to put it simply, ‘the rich drive on the roads, that have been built by the salaried class!’
Hopefully, this will either stop or grow less. Banks vaults are already bursting at the seam with cash deposits. Where was all this cash all this time? You know where it was, and now all this black has become white and will be taxed, and that taxation will build a better India!
Let us bear this hardship. If it was a war, and I have lived through small wars with our neighbours, that we tightened our belts and went through a few days and weeks of hardships knowing that if we did so our country would win.
Similarly, this is a war on corruption. The Prime Minister has asked us to fight this war with him.
Let us tighten our belts and give him those fifty days, he asks for, without complaining..!
