percent power access by 2018

Sylhet: The Power Division has started the installation of 11 sub-stations and two switching stations to ensure hundred percent power access to 13 upazilas of the district by 2018, reports UNB. Of them, Power Grid Company of Bangladesh Ltd (PGCB) will install a grid sub-station at Charkhai in Beanibazar upazila spending Tk 100 crore.
It will also construct towers and transmission lines to ensure adequate power supply and relieve local people from the load-shedding. The project is scheduled to complete by June, 2017.
According to Sylhet Palli Bidyut Samity sources, the Power Development Board (PDB) provides electricity to Sylhet city and the adjacent areas, while Sylhet Palli Bidyut Samity-1 to eight upazilas and Sylhet Palli Bidyut Samity-2 to five upazilas. According to Sylhet Palli Bidyut Samity-1, they have planned to supply power to all the villages under its operation zone by 2018. Samity-1 will bring the entire Fenchuganj upazila under its hundred percent electricity access by this year, while South Surma, Beanibazar and Bishwanath upazilas by 2017 and Golapganj and Balaganj upazilas by June, 2018, and Zakiganj and Osmaninagar by December, 2018, the sources added.
The electricity is provided to Sylhet from Kumargaon and Fenchuganj grids. As the power is supplied to the eight upazilas under Samity-1 from Kumargaon Grid, it sometimes faces overload.
Senior General Manager of Sylhet Palli Bidyut Samity-1 engineer M Mahbubul Alam said, “We would like to distribute uninterrupted power to the consumers. This is why several projects have been launched.”
He said the problems of power transmission will be resolved after the installation of Charkhai Grid station implemented by the PGCB.
Meanwhile, a third circuit of 33 KV has been built spending Tk 2.50 crore as the transmission line built on the Surma river faces overload. General Manager of Sylhet Palli Bidyut Samity-2 Dilip Chandra Sarkar said the five upazilas under the Samity will be brought under hundred percent electricity access by 2018.
