JP won’t contest Zilla Parishad polls: Ershad

Jatiya Party (JP) Chairman HM Ershad has said that his party would not participate in the forthcoming District Council(DC) polls, terming the election ‘meaningless’. However, the Jatiya Party was preparing to contest the next general election, Ershad declared  at a city convention centre while welcoming M Shahidur Rahman, a former senior vice president of the Bikalpa Dhara Bangladesh, to Jatiya Party yesterday.
Pointing to the proposal by BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia for reconstitution of the election commission (EC), Ershad opined that the commission should be reconstituted on the basis of discussion with those who have representation in parliament for forming a realistic EC as per the rules. Ershad’s remarks followed the announcement of schedule for the DC polls by CEC Kazi Rakibuddin Ahmad yesterday.
