Move on to stop ‘auto renewal’ of packages

Against the backdrop of dissatisfaction of mobile phone subscribers on quality of services, the Posts and Telecommunications Division has taken a move to stop anomalies in voice and internet packages, reports BSS.
The division has directed the regulator -Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC) to take necessary measures to stop "auto renewal" of any packages for voice and internet.
Talking to The Independent, Posts and Telecommunications Division Secretary Md Faizur Rahman Chowdhury yesterday said, they have taken some decisions through a meeting held recently with the state minister in the chair to protect the customers' interest.
"We've directed to stop auto renewal of any packages regarding voice and internet so that customers do not suffer any financial losses," he said.
"Finally, they (operators) have to take prior permission from the ministry to run any package," said Faizur Rahman, adding, "At anyhow, we want to minimize customers' sufferings."
Meanwhile, the division  has sent a letter to the BTRC asking to know details about the existing total number of packages regarding voice and internet being offered  by the operators.
An official said few days ago the letter has been forwarded to the BTRC that actually intends  to set boundary to the package number.
He said the operators are offering huge number of packages which many times creates a lot of
problems confusion and  harassments for the subscribers.
After getting response from the regulator, the official said, the division  would move to limit the package numbers.
Replying to a query regarding the letter, the Secretary said: "We are yet to receive reply from the BTRC, but hope to get it soon."
The division  has wanted to know the total number of existing packages, unapproved packages, auto renewal packages and details of customers' difficulties caused by those packages.
On the other hand, the BTRC is going to hold public auction on November 22 to hear the customers' complaints and their sufferings.
Earlier in September, Bangladesh Telecommu-nications Regulatory commission (BTRC) had taken strict measures against telecom operators offering packages which in turn create hassle for subscribers.
The decision was taken at that time in the commission meeting, which was confirmed by the BTRC Chairman Dr Shahjahan Mahmood.  BTRC Chairman  at that time said that BTRC is planning on getting feedback from the subscribers so that they can get a clear picture of the whole scenario.
Many a times it has been seen that operators would start an offered package without the knowledge of the subscriber.
Thus, as a result with the starting of the offer package the subscriber would unwillingly pay for the package.
