Traffic jam has paralysed public life in Barisal city, much to the sufferings in Eid shopping of the city dwellers.
The jam starts on the Sadar Road,
Girrja Moholla, Chawk Bazar, Line Road, Kathpotty, Fazlul Haque Avenue, Bagura Road and Kalibari Road at a time at about
11 am every day for the last two days and continues for hours.
It severe congestion continues from evening to night. Traffic police have failed to control the situation.
Sources at the Traffic Section of Barisal Metropolitan Police said that they were facing problems to tackle Eid rush on the roads of the divisional city due to manpower shortage and heavy Eid rush of shoppers from city and other places of the division.
At the same time, water pipe line situation of BCC has deteriorated.
Abu Raihan Muhammed Saleh, deputy commissioner (South) of BMP, said that on an average about 3,800 vehicles ply the main roads of the city, including Sadar Road, Girja Moholla Road, Chalk Bazar Road, Line Road, Fazlul Haque Avenue, Aviruchi More Road and Kakoli more Road every hour during daytime.
But during Eid rush for shopping, vehicles including rickshaw, easy bike, van, ambulance, private car, jeep, create huge traffic mess. “To control the situation, we post police personnel from different thanas but maximum time, they fail to give service as per public demand,” he added.
BMP has already set up 21 check posts in different places of the city to control traffic and maintain law and order situation.
But at present traffic jam is created at noon and continues for three hours and another term of congestion is created in the evening and it continues for three hours due to heavy rush of Eid shoppers. BMP traffic department sources said the department has only 80 posts of police personnel. Of the total posts, 16 have remained vacant since long.
Of the vacant posts, 8 out of 20 are sergeants, 4 out of 4 are traffic inspectors, two out of 10 are hablidars, 59 out of 60 are traffic constables.
Most of the sergeants and constables who are newly appointed have no proper training to control traffic.
BMP will deploy ten more constables to tackle Eid rush by tomorrow, said Commissioner of BMP Shaibal Kanti Chowdury. Commissioner of BMP said they will declare some main roads of the city one way during Eid to control the situation.
Sources said not only manpower crisis, but also dilapidated conditions of roads and lack of efforts to repair those are to be blamed for long hours of traffic jam on the city roads.
