Visitors South Africa did not have to toil too hard to wrap up the Twenty20 International series 2-0 after their spinners ensnared the lacklustre Bangladeshi batsmen to ensure a 31-run victory in the second match at Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium yesterday.
Bangladesh were derailed by leg-spinner Eddie Leie who ended up with three for 16, the best T20 figure for a South African bowler on debut. His efforts were complemented by left-arm spinner Aaron Phangiso (three for 30) and fast bowler Kyle Abbott (three for 20), as the hosts were bowled out for 138 in 19.2 overs after South Africa racked up 169-4.
Bangladeshi batsmen failed to read the true nature of a slow pitch and went after South African bowlers right from the go, which backfired soon for the hosts.
However, the openers gave Bangladesh a solid start, adding 46 runs in pursuit of 170. Tamim Iqbal looked uncomfortable throughout his innings, but his fellow opener Soumya Sarkar kept ticking the scoreboard. He was the only batsman who looked dominant against a quality Proteas bowling attack.
The rot began with Tamim (13) who was undone by a slower delivery of Wayne Parnell. Eddie Leie and Aaron Phangiso then joined the party to dismantle the middle order. Leie gave the team a crucial breakthrough by dismissing Soumya with a flighted delivery. Soumya scored a rapid 37 off 21 balls. Leie and Phangiso made regular inroads into the Bangladesh batting-order. They bowled with discipline and removed five batsmen for just 38 runs to leave Bangladesh tottering at 82 for six. All of the five batsmen, including the senior duo of Shakib Al Hasan (8) and Mushfiqur Rahim (19), tried to force the spinners, which eventually led to their downfall.
Debutant Rony Talukdar, however, showed his seniors in the team how put a price on one's wicket on a slow pitch where playing strokes was not easy. He propelled the side past 100, aided by Mashrafe Bin Mortaza who played some big shots to help the side reduce the margin. Rony made 21 and Mashrafe contributed 17 to the total.
Earlier, Bangladesh bowlers had made a decent job of restricting South Africa to 169. Both openers of the visiting side, AB de Villiers and Quinton de Kock, gave the visiting side a whirlwind start, adding 95 runs in just 10.3 overs after South Africa elected to bat first.
Bangladesh, however, hit back before the openers inflicted more damage, with left-arm spinner Arafat Sunny removing Kock (44) who was more attacking than his illustrious colleague. Kock smashed four fours and two sixes in his 31-ball knock. Part time off-spinner Nasir Hossain then dealt a double blow to the visitors by dismissing JP Duminy (6) and de Villiers (40) in consecutive deliveries. Although the spinners did well to contain the Proteas in the middle overs, David Miller and Rilee Rossouw accelerated the run rate in the last two overs in which they scored 32 runs. David Miller remained unbeaten on 30 and Rilee Rossouw hit a quick 19 off six deliveries by hitting one four and two sixes.
Nasir Hossain was the pick of the bowlers for Bangladesh with two for 26, while Arafat Sunny and Mustafizur Rahman took one wicket apiece.
